Scripture: Read- Genesis 3:1-7

). Why is it significant that the serpent is referred to as a “best of the field”? What does this say about the serpent, and why does this matter?

). The serpent begins his conversation with the woman saying, “Did God actually say”. What is the serpent trying to do here? Where have you experienced similar disruptions in your life as a follower of Jesus?

). In Genesis 3:3, the woman added to God’s command when she said, “neither shall you touch it”. How might a misunderstanding of God’s word, and specifically in this case an addition or extra prohibition, lead us astray? Think through a time in your life where additional rules and restrictions led you further away from God? Why do you think this was the case?

). The serpent is trying to cause the woman to forget her identity as an image bearer of God. Discuss with one another your own tendencies. In what areas of your life do you tend to forget your identity? What is it about these times that cloud your memory?

). On Sunday, we talked about the “see, good, took” construction found throughout Scripture. How can we combat this tool that the enemy so effectively uses against us? How can we defend ourselves from the deception that causes us to forget who we are and reach out and grasp what is not ours to take? Brainstorm with your community group, and share some of the struggles you have. Sin thrives in the darkness, but is snuffed out by the light.

). Adam fails as a prophet, as a priest and as a king because he is silent in the face of the enemy. How does the second Adam pick up where the first one failed? Think through specific examples found in Scripture, and then think through how we are, in Christ, to go and do likewise.
