What sort of circumstances tend to squelch your rejoicing, cause increased anxiety, and rob your sense of contentment in Christ? Are you experiencing any of these currently and what steps can you take to rejoice again, conquer anxiety, and be content? 

Engage the Text: 

Describe common ways in which verse 13 is poorly applied because of a lack of concern for its context. Discuss how this verse matters because it applie to all of us, it is humbling, it is possible, and it is Christ exalting. 

Compare the first section of the letter, 1:3-11 with the last section 4:10-20. Name common words you see in both sections (in the Greek, there are 8 common words). Name common themes you see in both sections. What lessons are taught in both sections?
